Dr. Sam Afshar is a board-certified Cardiologist and Internist who joins Austin Heart as an Interventional Cardiologist, treating patients with cardiovascular diseases through catheter-based procedures. Dr. Afshar was born in Iran and moved to Dallas, Texas at a young age.

Dr. Sam Afshar received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999. In 2006, he earned his Medical Degree from UT Health Science Center in San Antonio, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Afshar completed his residency in Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern in Dallas, Texas in 2009, followed by a Cardiology Fellowship from UT Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas in 2012. He was employed by Christus Health in East Texas as a cardiologist until 2020, where he served as the Director of the Cardiac Non-invasive Imaging and Cardiac Rehabilitation departments. During this time, he was named to the Texas Monthly Top Doctors List for four consecutive years. In 2021, Dr. Afshar completed a Structural and Endovascular Cardiology Fellowship, followed by an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship in 2022 at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Afshar developed a special interest in medicine and cardiology at a young age after his father was diagnosed with heart disease and was successfully treated. During his career, he has authored multiple peerreviewed journal articles, been elected to Fellowship in the American College of Cardiology, and is an active member in the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions.

He is also a champion for the “Go Red for Women” campaign, serving as a keynote speaker. Dr. Afshar has a special interest in coronary and peripheral vascular interventions. Dr. Afshar is also board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Echocardiography, Nuclear Cardiology, and Vascular Imaging.
